Shades of Purple

Warning: Lots of images ahead

After my last post on Corals (, a friend asked me about different shades of berries.

Within this post, I’m going to cover Wines, Berries, Plums, Burgundy, Mahogany, Black Cherry and Vampy. These are all different shades of purples. The difference between the three are just a mix of how much red and how much blue there are in the final colour. The differences between these shades, especially between the wines, berries and plums are extremely subtle (a lot more than the different shades of coral), and can actually differ with different lighting, or from the pigmentation of the lips For example, I’ve classified MAC Hang Up under wine here after checking my own lipstick closely, but I know if I were to wear it it’d look more like a berry. And whilst doing this post, I’ve had to check and recheck and recheck some of the shades because I’m just not entirely sure which is which.

Purple is the giant group that all the colours below. There are few makeup products that are labelled ‘purple’ only because all the options below are a more accurate colour. (Just like under ‘red’ you have tangerine red, true red, blue red, berry, etc.) What ends up being labelled ‘purple’ is usually a fairly neutral, “true” purple – not too much blue or red. There aren’t very many makeup products in this colour, usually because it’s seen as outlandish.

The lips are a deeper shade than the image above, but you can still see that it is still purple, and not obviously in either the blue or red spectrum. Image from

Her eyeshadow is purple, her lips are a deeper purple with somewhat redder undertones, but it still won’t be classified under burgundy. It’s a berry blush used on her cheeks. Image from

Plum, according to the Wiki page, is just a dark purple.  I’ve been trying to figure out exactly what makes a colour plum, but that’s the closest definition I’ve been able to find without going into the RBY spectrum.

Burgundy is is a deep dark red colour, named after the red wine, which comes from the Burgundy region in France. It has some purple hues but it is mostly red. It’s more synonymous with crimson or maroon, rather than wine actually.

MAC Everembellish

MAC Ever Embellish looks like a wine in the lipstick. (It’s a Lustre finish, so it’s more like a sheen or stain on my lips.) Image is my own.

Mahogany is like a wine with brown mixed into it. Australian makeup artist Rae Morris says that it is a neutral colour and suits both cool and warm skin tones.

Vampy doesn’t refer to any particular colour (different shades of red or purple) but more like the darkness and intensity of the colour.
